Lip syncing test

We tried out lip syncing with 3 of our actors to get an idea of who was best at lip syncing and therefore would be the lead singer in our band. After a few attempts we found that David was best at lip syncing as he already knew all the word to our chosen song 'use somebody' by Kings of Leon and was in time with the music. Testing out the lip syncing before filming our music video made it a lot easier to pick who was going to be which band member as we knew straight away that David was right for the lead singer role in the band.

RISK ASSESSMENT OF FILMING

On the 20th of October was our first filming day where we went to the Christ Church in Epsom. We needed to film inside a church as multiple lines of our chosen song for our music video relate to religion and churches. We chose an evening service on a Sunday where a choir would play, a priest would read from the bible and the public would sing along with hymns.

I believe parts of the filming went well where in advance I made a list of the things needed to be filmed in the church so when we were at the church to film I knew exactly what needed to filmed so there was no confusion of trying to remember what needed to be filmed. As a result we got the desired footage we needed to be apart of our music video.

As well as parts of our filming going well some aspects didn't work as well as others. We planned on filming the outside of the church as well as the inside but found the evening service was too dark where on the camera the outside of the church was not visible. This would be the only part of filming we needed which we did not get, therefore will have to go back to the church on another evening but at an earlier time to re-film what we needed to get.

Whilst we were planning our music video we wanted a male priest to be part of our music video as it would relate more to the lyrics and look better overall if it was a male, but on the evening service we went to the priest was a female, this is something we could not control.

Whilst we was filming we came across a few hazards which affected our filming. There was a member of the general public who had mental health issues who became a disruption as he wanted to be filmed dancing and wanted to be in our footage, we had to patiently wait and stop filming every time he was in the view of the camera which resulted in us to keep stopping and starting our filming. Whilst in the church there was also a bat flying around which was a distraction and we had to make sure it was not in our footage.

On the 9th of November Tilly and I went to the firework display at Hook road arena in Epsom. As fire is a big part of our music video I thought that firework night would be a good night to film as after the fireworks there is an extremely large bonfire. This bonfire would look good as part of our music video as having a little bonfire in my garden would not have that much of a great effect.

I think my idea of filming the bonfire worked well as I got really good footage of the fire, the flames, the ash and the smoke coming from the fire. All these different aspects we can use in our music video. The camera allowed us to zoom right into the fire so we got some good shots that were zoomed in, mid shots and establishing shots.

A part of the filming that did not work so well is that we did not have a tripod. This is because it was raining and firework night is always really muddy therefore the tripod would have just sunk and got ruined, therefore I had to hold the camera as still as possible. Another hazard we came across was the fact we was filming with an expensive camera. There are many teenagers around, some had been drinking as well as some not being the nicest of people therefore we tried to keep out of the way of the crowds and film at the sides as a result not bringing any attention to the camera we had.

Filming schedule

Within the film industry institutions use filming schedules to follow what they are filming and also to inform others viewing in the video, the creators and editors on the location and timing in which the events need to be recorded. Using a filming schedule is a professional document used by the majority of large cooperations.

Filming set up

Before beginning to film the music video, as a group we arranged the instruments being used into a realist and stereotypical band set up, as if the band were preforming on stage. Doing this before allowed us to move the various instruments and arrange the band members positions to fit into the frame.
Using the black curtain behind the band gives a simple background therefore the main focus is on the band.

Using Photoshop, we were able to design and create a production company logo. The production company is named Bass Records to relate with a musical theme. Choosing black and white colours keeps the image bold and simple, creating a professional outcome.

Filming

Filming

The 27th of February was the first day we started filming for our new song 'Use Somebody' by Kings Of Leon. We used the stage in school which was the most appropriate location and we got the instruments and props ready beforehand to save time when our actors arrived, this way we could get straight into filming. Our actors seem very professional and take the filming seriously which is much easier for us as we can get the filming done quickly!
Overall we got a lot of the main filming we needed for our music video done, which made the filming session successful. The only problems we encountered was that we were not allowed to use the lighting in the hall which would have benefited us as it would have lit up the scene rather than it being so dark. Also we wanted to play our song through the hall speakers so the band could hear it clearly, but we were not allowed so we made do playing it from a laptop, although not as clear it still done the job!

The 3rd of March was the next time we filmed for our music video. As we compared timetables with our band we all had a free lesson in the morning and in the afternoon, therefore we filmed twice on this day. Filming in the morning did not go so well as all of the instruments had been locked away and the teacher with the key was not around. In order to film we would have needed these to make the filming look similar to the previous footage we had recorded. Instead we used this time to film up close to the actors faces for the close ups we required for the music video as the instruments were not required for this.

In the afternoon on the 3rd of March we filmed again, this time we had all of the instruments and props we needed set up prior to filming therefore we spent the whole time filming various angles of the band which would look good in our music video. Our actors have been getting used to us filming them and are no longer acting shy or reluctant, this means we can get our filming done each filming session as quickly as possible. Overall our filming so far has gone successfully well, in 3 hours of filming we have got the majority of our filming done which includes a variety of shots and camera angles.

Treatment

We originally chose to focus on the hip hop genre, researching Kayne West's song 'No church in the wild'. After attempting to create our music video to this song, as a group we agreed it would be challenging to produce professional outcome. For our music video, as a group we have chosen a new genre of, Alternative Rock. The main reason for choosing this genre was because of the broad variety of music that is popular throughout the a wide range of audiences. The artists emotions and expressions can be shown within the lyrics, as the majority are written and composed by the artists, unlike most songs within the pop genre.  Use somebody by Kings of Leon is the main focus of our music video project. The reason for choosing this song is that they lyrics are simple, resulting in the main actor being able to lip-sync to the original audio track.

The actors we will use for this video will be a four membered male band and one female. The reason for choosing four males is that,  it portrays a stereotypical rock band. The costume for the males will represent the rock genre, wearing a casual attire such as t-shirts and jeans. The females roll in the video is to symbolise a romantic aspect, relating to the emotion within the song.

During the song, we will show clips of our band on a stage with a number of lights giving the appearance that they're at a concert. We will involve a small crowd however using carefully selected camera angles to give a different effect of a larger crowd. Throughout the clip we aim to show the female and the main band member to symbolise a love narrative.

Props list

Props List
Props we needed for our filming:
  • Drum kit
  • Bass Guitar
  • Microphone
  • Electric Guitar
  • 2 Amps
  • 2 Cameras
  • Tripod
  • Lights
by looking at different rock music videos and seeing what most of them include we chose a story line and planning what we wanted in our own music video we then knew what props we needed to include.

Costume

Band's Costume for 'Use Somebody'

Mood Board

I researched what typical rock bands look like and created a mood board of different rock bands and how they dress. They are mainly all males with a few exceptions so we have kept to this norm and created an all male band. They are all wearing quite casual, plain clothing and simple t-shirts. Our band members will be dressed with the typical codes an conventions that i have found to go with the rock theme. I have gathered images if examples f the type of clothing our actors will be wearing.
